Great spot on the north side of Horse Lake. The island was large enough for a wandering adventure and has great views all the way around. We saw a fair amount of wildlife - including loons, beavers, and hummingbirds. The landing was easy and the best tent pads were on the path to the east side. The wood was pretty picked over and sparse, but the edges of Horse are close enough to go scavenging. You are able to get cell service intermittently on the east side and near the firepit. This allowed us to check the forecast and see a large storm coming - giving us the chance to prepare.

Nice island site secluded at north end of Horse. Landing was good and tent pads were better than average. We had 3 kids with us on this trip, so the fact that it was an island added to their adventure. Had good fishing north of island. Painters invaded the lower ranks of the island to lay eggs, so that was quite cool. Loons were vocally active and the positioning of the site allowed for nice sunset views. While Horse Lake is not my favorite lake, this site was very functional with good character. Great for a moderate sized group with kids. One other bonus if using as a base camp, the trip from this site to basswood falls is an awesome adventure as you get to experience Horse River in route to the falls. Trip will take up 6-8 hours of your day, so it's a perfect fit if you like to take day trips from a base camp. Also, good swimming beach within a short paddle of the island. Overall, a very solid site.

Excellent island site. About as isolated as you could be on this popular lake. Good for watching sun sets and allowing breeze in to keep bugs down.
